- Taking advantage of freebies. Many search engines (the SE from SEO) offer free listings for businesses. Most of the time, it only takes a bit of information to verify that you are the actual owner of the business, and then Viola!, your company is listed on google maps right next to Applebees! A great example is when you add your business to Google, they typically give you $200 in “free” advertising. This suggestion can be a bit tricky, and there are some best practices that are recommended. It’s a great start to get your info out there, but we do recommend talking to someone with experience and success setting this up.
- Have a contact form on your site. Make it easy for your customers to contact you. They can’t spend their money if they can’t get ahold of you. There are plenty of email management systems out there today that help automate this process too. A lot of them offer free or inexpensive plans that can help you organize and update your email list. Your email list is invaluable. Make sure to keep your data clean and always collect more information than you think necessary. You may not need to know Suzy’s birthday now, but maybe in 3 years when she’s your biggest customer, you would want to send her a huge birthday basket! It’s a lot easier and more cost-effective to filter through information that you already have than to acquire new.

5.5 Ok we will give you one more that really drives me nuts. Update your flipping copyright on your site. If your website still shows a copyright of last year, your web designer didn’t do their job correctly. There is code to automatically update the copyright to the correct year. Maybe they didn’t know, but what else didn’t they know? This is a small thing, but when I see large websites like Girl Scouts still having a 2021 copyright, I can’t help but question, what else have they missed? Are they on top of security? How do they handle transactions? Are they PCI compliant?
